En este trabajo se realiza un análisis preospectivo sobre las agrobiotecnologías, evaluando su posible impacto en el contexto latinoamericano y se presentan algunas opciones estratégicas sobre cómo aprovechar los cambios tecnológicos que se están dando en el mundo. Prospectar se define como mirar hacia adelante. Es posible agrupar las diferentes técnicas biotecnológicas de diversas maneras. Una de ellas, de acuerdo con el nivel o estructura modificado en el organismo sobre el cual se trabaja. Se obtienen así tres grupos de técnicas, segœn el objeto alterado: organismo, célula o molécula. Otra clasificación posible es la siguiente: ingeniería genética, anticuerpos monoclonales, cultivo de tejidos y fusión celular y biosíntesis de metabolitos secundarios. Se identifican entre otras, las siguientes áreas de investigación biotecnológica, relacionadas con el sector agropecuario: aumento de la biomasa vegetal y de la productividad animal, propagación clonal de diversas variedades, incremento en la velocidad de los cambios genéticos, resistencia a enfermedades y determinación del sexo en animales. Específicamente, se espera un fuerte impacto de la ingeniería genética en la producción de semillas mejoradas por técnicas biotecnológicas con mayor resistencia al estrés ambiental. Se estima que su venta será de unos cuatro millones de dólares estadounidenses a principios de la próxima década.
