La presente investigación se realizó en Barrio Nuevo, Zacapa, Guatemala, con el propósito de evaluar herbicidas conocidos en el mercado local para resolver el problema de los altos costos de producción de cebolla ocasionados por la erradicación manual de malezas. El cultivo de cebolla en el país se concentraba en Jalapa, Chiquimula, Zacapa y Jutiapa, regiones con condiciones climáticas favorables. En Zacapa, aunque se cultivaba en pequeña escala, los rendimientos eran satisfactorios, pero el ingreso neto de los agricultores se reducía por la elevada mano de obra necesaria para el control de malezas, que representaba más del 50 % de las labores agrícolas y en ocasiones dañaba parte de la plantación. La horticultura moderna incorporaba métodos de control químico y deshierbe mecánico como alternativas viables. El estudio se planteó dos objetivos: determinar si el uso de herbicidas era significativo en el ingreso bruto por unidad de área y realizar un análisis económico para establecer si el herbicida más eficaz era también el más rentable. |
