La presente investigación señaló que, aunque en el trópico existen millones de especies de insectos, solo unas pocas causan daños significativos a la agricultura, como en el cultivo de algodón en Guatemala, severamente afectado por el gusano bellotero (Heliothis zea). Debido a la alta capacidad de oviposición de las hembras, los insecticidas convencionales resultaron insuficientes para controlar la plaga, por ello, se planteó la necesidad de utilizar pesticidas con acción ovicida que actúen antes de la eclosión. En Centroamérica se identificaron dos productos comerciales, Amitraz (MITAC) y Chlorodimeform (GALECRON/FUNDAL), los cuales podían emplearse junto a insecticidas tradicionales o en mezclas con parationes, ofreciendo un método más eficaz y económico de control. |
