El cultivo comercial de algodón en Guatemala, es relativamente reciente, pues si tomamos en consideración las cifras estadísticas mostradas por la Dirección General de Estadistica y de Agricultura, sobre el mismo, encontramos que la producción de algodón en rama en el año 1949/50 fue 40,226 quintales, en tanto que en el año 1954-55 fue de 472,177 quintales lo que dio margen a abastecer el consumo local y a la iniciación de nuestro país como exportador, en ese año se exportaron 109,194 quintales oro con un valor FOB de Q. 3.637.041 tendencia que se ha venido incrementando pues ya para el año de 1960-61 la producción en rama fué de 1.247,148 quintales y las exportaciones alcanzaron un valor FOB de Q. 5.714,316. |
